Fragile Things are Beautiful Many years ago, when I was a kid in school, I used to collage magazines so that I would have these fashion and design vision boards I could flip through. Once, I made this fabric magazine from Indian saree material and tear sheets of couture. I looked at it later on and thought it was such a messy and raw thing. I think I took it apart and used the materials for other crafts. I wish now that I kept it together. Art journals, fabric books & pocket journals are somewhat of thing now but so many people had been making things, for years, out of scraps and the need to create little platforms for art therapy, using what they already had and creating something from scratch over buying the shiny perfect sketchpad or notebook. I love the shiny and new, and there is a lot of merchandise out there that is truly gorgeous. Yet, I'm tired of perfect. And I have so much...stuff. And there is such a strong urge to make art so, I figure, why not make things from ...

Ribbons & Pearls! I love delicate details on statement pieces, like ribbon woven through a strand of faux pearls or torn and shorn fabric knotted in between glittering druzy stones on a long necklace. I've been experimenting with frayed ribbon, strips of satin and lace combined with metal, beads and semi precious stones for years. I think it's all about a mix of textures. Below is a piece made from a second hand faux pearl necklace I bought at a thrift store called Talize. I cleaned it and added craft lace, organza bows, fraying taffeta strips and bits of purple and silver threaded chiffon from a sari textile I purchased at a local Indian fabrics store.
